Eighteen-year-old Jimmy Miller, called Singer by his platoon mates, wants to prove his bravery in the trials of war, but he never considered how hard it would be to kill a man or what might happen if he did. He doesn’t think about death and dying; he only imagines the glory. But when a vicious North Vietnamese Army ambush engulfs Singer and his friends, everything changes. In the heat of battle, Singer confronts the terrible truth of war and discovers a frightening darkness within himself. His struggle to survive takes on a deeper meaning that tests his courage in ways he never expected.

“A wonderful and terrifying ride . . . In depth of character and intensity of story, it reminded me of All Quiet on the Western Front.”
– Mary Logue, author of the Claire Watkins mystery series

“Every so often a work comes along that translates the inexplicable experience into a direct and haunting narrative. Perfume River Nights is such a book. It offers powerful and terrifying insights into combat, and the reflections, feelings, and actions of combat soldiers. In addition to being an engaging story, it is an important work on the psychological effects of combat trauma. It is a must read, not only for every mental health professional working with individuals with trauma and PTSD, but also for anyone seeking to understand the ordeal of combat. For every combat soldier who could not explain their combat experience, this work is their voice.”
– Ernie Boswell, Ph.D., clinical psychologist

“An immensely compelling story filled with terror and characters who touch the heart.”
– Natalie Goldberg, author of Writing Down the Bones and The Great Spring
